Why Passivhaus?
Passivhaus is not a product or brand name, it represents a construction model and accredited building standard.
Passivhaus translates as a ‘passive house’, a building that has as little impact on its surrounding environment as possible (carbon neutral).
Building design, construction methods, insulation and ventilation systems work to achieve energy efficiency. A continuous airtight outer shell maintains an almost constant temperature needing very little additional heating or cooling. This makes Passivhaus built homes not only pleasant to live in, but low cost to run and maintain with minimal environmental impact. They are recognised as being up to 90% more energy efficient than existing building stock and 75% more efficient than new builds.
German Engineering, of course
Like many high quality, technologically advanced engineering standards we know today, the Passivhaus system and ideology was pioneered in Germany in the 1980s. Passivhaus buildings first appeared in the UK in 2009.
Passivhaus building standards are recognised and accredited by the Passivhaus Institute in Germany, with a 5-point system representing:
- Superior insulation
- Triple glazing with insulated frames
- Outstanding airtightness (around 200% better than a standard build home)
- Mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system
- Thermal bridge-free design
